Global Demand for Pilots:
An industry forecast that nearly half a million new airline pilots will be needed worldwide over the next 20 years as airlines expand their fleets, has raised safety concerns that airlines will hire pilots of lower calibre as they struggle to fill slots.
Boeing, one of the world’s largest makers of commercial jetliners forecasts that about 465,000 new pilots will be needed worldwide between now and 2031 as global economies expand and airlines take deliveries of tens of thousands of new commercial jetliners. The forecast includes 69,000 new pilots in North America, mostly in the U.S. The greatest growth will be in the Asia-Pacific region, where an estimated 185,600 new pilots will be needed.
A typical career path is to get hired as a first officer at a regional airline, get promoted to captain and then get hired by a mainline carrier.
To advance to the pinnacle of the profession, a student needs to gain experience in any number of creative ways. For example:
- Try teaching. Many pilots start their careers as flight instructors.
- Take assignments with charter planes or air-taxi companies.
- Go private. Don’t forget about opportunities flying corporate planes.
- And some pilots take jobs as flight engineers with the airlines.
Dual Job Opportunities
There will be dual job opportunities when the students undergo the pilot training overseas. After CPL, the students can undertake flight instructor training and can get flight instructor job abroad. Based on immigration law of the host country, the student can stay back with the work permit and work as instructor. Based on “surging aviation demand in emerging markets”, Boeing predicts that airline fleet expansion around the world will drive what it calls an “exponential increase” in demand for pilots and mechanics over the next 20 years. In its Pilot and Technician Outlook, Boeing predicts a record need for an additional 533,000 airline pilots and 584,000 maintenance technicians to meet global aviation requirements.
The greatest demand for pilots and mechanics continues to be in the Asia Pacific region, with China in the lead. But other areas of the world are also experiencing large fleet expansions, including the Middle East. By region, the predicted 20 year demand for new pilots is: Asia Pacific 216,000, Europe 94,000, North America 88,000, the Middle East 55,000, Latin America 45,000, the Commonwealth of Independent States [former Soviet Union countries] 18,000 and Africa 17,000.
For mechanics, the greatest demand is also forecast in the emerging Asia Pacific markets, with a projected need for 224,000 new airline mechanics over the next 20 years. In addition, the projected demand by region is: Europe 102,000, North America 109,000, the Middle East 62,000, Latin America 44,000, CIS 24,000 and Africa 19,000.

Simulator Training
Sunsea Aviation Services P Ltd has installed ELITE ATD (FAA approved) at its Corporate office in Chennai. It gives trainees a mental edge by providing a safe training environment that is conducive to learning, practicing and understanding instrument procedures. The simulator is a powerful training tool that helps students practice their instrument thinking skills ie. Visualizing procedures, situational awareness, scan techniques etc before getting in the aircraft. Equipped with the training experience from the ELITE ATD, students then take to the air better prepared to perform what they have learned.
The simulator training in VFR and IFR modules train the students about various aspects of non instrument and instrument conditions. Students can be taught in ATD which are impossible to simulate in the real aircrafts.
Commercial Pilot license holders and professions give practical tips to students during the simulator training. This will improve the students’ confidentiality level and flying skill without much of the expenses.
